Cpl. Jonathan Ayers Memorial Scholarship

In memory

Cpl. Jonathan R. Ayers, 24, of Snellville, GA was one of nine soldiers who fell in the heat of battle while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. Cpl. Ayers died of wounds suffered when their outpost was attacked by small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades from enemy forces in Wanat, Afghanistan, on July 13, 2008. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment (Airborne), 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Vicenza, Italy.

The award

The American Legion Riders of Loganville Post 233 are proud to provide this annual scholarship, endowed from monies raised by the Legion Riders. It benefits a deserving student from Walton or Gwinnett County with a $1,000 scholarship.

Eligibility

  • Resident of Walton or Gwinnett County, Georgia
  • High school senior at a public, private, parochial, or home school
  • Pursuing higher education at an accredited college, university, or trade school

How it works

The award is based on an essay contest focused on applied freedoms in America. The contest opens January 1 and the award is announced in April.

Needs the current year's prompt. The archive preserved the 2023 essay prompt (a passage from Theodore Roosevelt's "Citizenship in a Republic" speech). The Post should supply the current prompt, deadline, and submission instructions.
